Strengthening spill response with trained fishing vessels in Scottish waters
We offer enhanced oil spill response capabilities for members operating in Scottish waters, in collaboration with Marine Environmental Solutions Limited (MES). Available through enhanced membership coverage, the UKCS Fishing Vessels service provides guaranteed vessel access for rapid response efforts.
Access to fishing vessels and their trained crews who can support a range of spill response activities reduces the requirement to turn to the charter market to obtain oil industry-related vessels, which can be time-consuming with no guarantee of availability. Within 24 hours of notification, two fishing vessels with trained crews will be available, with an additional two vessels accessible within 48 hours. A minimum of four vessels will remain on continuous standby, with the potential to mobilise up to eight more on a best endeavours basis, supporting a sustained response for as long as required.
The partnership with MES ensures that fishing vessel crews are fully trained to operate safely and effectively in an oil spill response scenario. This service strengthens regional capabilities by integrating local resources into OSRL's response network.

OSRL's response specialists train the vessel crews annually, covering response safety, surveillance, boom deployment, towing, and dispersant operations. This ensures they are trained to perform a variety of response tasks for different oil spill scenarios.

There are a total of 12 vessels available which can be mobilised for a single incident - subject to availability.

Two fishing vessels with trained crew will be available within 24 hours of notification and two more within 48 hours. A minimum of four vessels will be continuously available, with ‘best endeavours’ access to up to eight additional vessels until it is practical to demobilise.
