Enhancing situational awareness with UAV technology
Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer a unique advantage over traditional surveillance methods. They deliver high-resolution imagery, live video streaming, and specialised sensor data to improve situational awareness. These aerial assets support a wide range of applications, including Shoreline Clean-up Assessment Technique (SCAT) team assistance, gas monitoring, oil verification, and offshore spill tracking.
Through strategic partnerships with UAV service providers worldwide, we provide our members with access to UAV support during a response through their core membership coverage. The availability of UAVs is subject to regional aviation regulations, provider availability, and necessary flight permissions. A UAV deployment typically includes an experienced UAV operator, a sensor operator, and, when required, additional OSRL oil spill response specialists.
We work on a best endeavours response, and if the service is requested, we'll do our best to accommodate your requirements based on UAV availability.

-
We work with UAV providers globally to ensure rapid response, though mobilisation times depend on provider availability and regulatory approvals.
-
UAVs can be equipped with a range of sensors, including high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, gas detection, and multispectral sensors for environmental monitoring.
-
Yes, UAVs play a crucial role in locating and tracking oil offshore, increasing encounter rates, and improving response coordination.
-
UAV data enhances our response efforts by providing real-time aerial intelligence, complementing satellite imagery, vessel observations, and field assessments.
-
Weather conditions, such as high winds and heavy rain, influence UAV performance. We work with providers to assess feasibility on a case-by-case basis.
