Fast, effective aerial dispersant delivery using advanced capabilities
Time is critical when it comes to a spill. Our aviation dispersant application service is designed to rapidly deliver a high-volume, targeted response to marine oil spills around the world. As part of our core membership coverage, our aerial capability enables the quick application of approved dispersants, supporting offshore oil spill response.
For many years, we achieved these capabilities using the iconic Lockheed Hercules L-382 aircraft. Otherwise known as the C-130A, this aircraft consists of one Rapid Installation and Deployment Spray System (RIDSS) with a maximum allowable capacity of 12,000 litres. The Hercules remains a highly versatile and effective wide-area dispersant application platform.
Following the Macondo incident in 2010, the industry recognised the need for more advanced and globally available aerial dispersant options. This led to a reassessment of the aircraft needed for effective response. The result - we partnered with T2 Aviation, part of the 2Excel Aviation group, to introduce a world-first innovation - the Tersus Dispersant Delivery System installed on two modified Boeing 727-200 aircraft.
These aircraft have been re-engineered to house internal dispersant tanks, pumps, and a custom-built spray bar system. Each aircraft can carry up to 15,000 litres of dispersant and is capable of rapid deployment across continents. The Boeing 727's range, speed, and payload make it the ideal choice to deliver a high-impact response in the shortest possible time.
The Tersus system is the only aerial dispersant system globally approved for use on a large jet aircraft, setting a new standard in oil spill response. Its development marked a milestone not just for us, but for the wider spill response and aviation communities.

Aerial Dispersant FAQs
