ATSEA-2 Webinar Series - Part 1: Causes, Fates and Impacts of Marine Oil Spills

The first in the ATSEA-2 webinar series, this session introduces the foundational science behind oil spills—exploring how they occur, their fate in marine environments, and their impacts. Delivered in collaboration between OSRL and the ATSEA-2 Regional Project Management Unit, the webinar sets the stage for more advanced response topics by unpacking real-world scenarios, ecosystem effects and behaviour of oil in the marine environment.

Understanding the causes, behaviour, and impacts of marine oil spills – ATSEA-2 webinar part 1

This webinar is the first in a four-part technical series developed as part of the collaboration between the ATSEA-2 Regional Project Management Unit (RPMU) and OSRL. It lays the groundwork for future sessions by examining the root causes of oil spills, the physical and chemical processes that determine their behaviour at sea, and the environmental and socio-economic consequences that follow.

This session is essential viewing for environmental managers, policy makers and response planners looking to understand the full picture of oil spill risks in the Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS) region.

The webinar features detailed insights into:

  • Common causes and sources of marine oil spills in the ATS region
  • How oil behaves, spreads, and degrades in marine environments
  • Ecological and socio-economic impacts of oil spills on marine ecosystems and coastal communities
  • Case studies from real-world spill scenarios

This webinar will allow you to:

  • Understand how oil spills behave in the ocean
  • Recognise the environmental and social impacts of marine oil pollution
  • Build a scientific foundation for planning effective response strategies

The session is led by subject matter specialists from OSRL and partners within the ATSEA-2 programme.
