Beyond The Model

Join OSRL’s geomatics specialist Liam as he explores how we turn complex oil spill modelling data into clear, actionable insights. Discover how different applications—from contingency planning to emergency response—require tailored visualisation strategies, and why not all maps are created equal.

Making models matter: how OSRL turns data into decisions

Oil spill modelling is a vital capability in preparing for and responding to incidents. It helps predict where oil may travel, how it may behave, and supports everything from response decision-making to long-term environmental planning. But while the models produce vast amounts of data, turning that data into something meaningful—and usable—isn’t always straightforward.

In this engaging 30-minute session, OSRL’s globally recognised Geomatics Specialist, Liam Harrington, shares his perspective on the state of oil spill modelling and its real-world application. Drawing on OSRL’s operational experience and his own specialist insight, Liam explores how data is transformed to directly support decision-makers—whether during a live incident or in planning scenarios.

Key topics include:

  • Why do we model in the first place?
A practical overview of the various uses of oil spill modelling, from informing contingency plans and environmental impact assessments to selecting the right response equipment or identifying strategic base locations. Liam also explains how modelling integrates with other OSRL services to maximise value.

  • “Show me what I need—not what you think I need.”
Not all model outputs are equally useful in every scenario. Liam unpacks how each application demands a specific approach to data visualisation—one that delivers the right level of clarity and relevance to its intended audience. It’s about designing outputs that support confident, informed decision-making.

  • What’s Liam’s issue with probability maps?
Liam explains why probability maps, while commonly used, are often misunderstood or misapplied. He’ll explore the risks of relying on overly simplified interpretations, and why he believes these maps can obscure more than they reveal if not used carefully. His advice? Use them with caution—and never without context.

Whether you're a responder, planner, or part of a stakeholder team, this session will offer a deeper understanding of how oil spill modelling can move beyond the technical and into the practical—helping you get the insight you actually need.
